#aboerjc Thank you @Cambrian_Jess for the article and discussion. Our discussion will be archived in a few days to capture synch and asynch participation. @DocBlom @egchristiansen @CordeliaSnowdon @nthnlwly @DebJCarter Take care all.Jess O’Reilly @Cambrian_Jess

Since our hour is up, I want to thank everyone who participated in the #ABOERJC conversation this evening. It was fun, thought-provoking & Godzilla-approved. Let’s be gentle with ourselves and do our best to support each other in open ways & otherwise.

A5 #aboerjc In the USA #GoOpen initiative for K-12 there are ambassador states to support newer states – so a mentoring model even at a high level ( big oer) not just educator level(little oer).

Cordelia Snowdon @CordeliaSnowdon6dReplying to @Cambrian_Jess

#ABOERJC A5: I also think it makes sense to target advocacy and find ways to focus efforts. We struggled with our advocacy it we tried to appeal to all profs – but there are many who will never be convinced to experiment with their approach to teaching.

And perhaps renewable with their consent #aboerjcNathan Lawley  he/him/his @nthnlwlyReplying to @nthnlwly

#aboerjc A4: Several of my profs are doing async video lectures; one day a week and live class the other day. There is perhaps an opportunity to assign students to create “mini lectures” that profs could combine to use in their course moving forward as video lectures. 2/2

#ABOERJC this^^ as well as sharing student stories. It is so powerful to hear students talk about the benefits of OER that they experienced thanks to profs at our university.

Jess O’Reilly @Cambrian_Jess6d

Q5: Please share your reactions to the excerpt below (p. 144). If faculty are more likely to adopt OER-EP if they can engage with powerful examples, what can institutions, practitioners, learning designers & advocates do to support open practices beyond OER adoption? #ABOERJC

Cordelia Snowdon @CordeliaSnowdon6dReplying to @Cambrian_Jess

#ABOERJC It’s an important question. I think that the invitation can still be there but it needs to be clear so students can be consenting collaborators in the process and not just engaging because they think they have to

Rosemarri Klamn, MAPC, CPHR she/her/hers @KlamnJam6d

#aboerjc A4: For #openaccess #OEP-EP enthusiasts it may be an opportunity to draw others into #OEP; it may be daunting for others who do not know where to begin, or feel they do not have the time, confidence, or ability to make the shift. @DoctorDoood @DocBlom @egchristiansenJess O’Reilly @Cambrian_Jess

Q4: How might the pandemic impact educators’ ability to facilitate renewable assignments and OER-EP learning opportunities over the coming academic year(s)? #ABOERJC

A4. I’m struggling with this. In the midst of a global pandemic, is it appropriate to invite students to work in ways that are non-standard and potentially public? Will this just add to the stress or increase the perceived relevance? I know both statements will hold true #ABOERJC

Show this threadCordelia Snowdon @CordeliaSnowdon6dReplying to @Cambrian_Jess

#ABOERJC A4: Since we already have so many online courses and MOOCs, I don’t imagine there will be a huge increase. If anything I think we might see a decrease because it is exhausting to maintain a high engagement and commitment to online work right now

Dr. Constance Blomgren @DocBlom6dReplying to @Cambrian_Jess

A4 #aboerjc mmm….I still think that #OER awareness is key before you can move into # #OER readiness & then oer enabled pedagogy @johnhiltoniii @opencontent @egchristiansen @erikasmith @margymaclibrary @CordeliaSnowdon

#aboerjc A4: I was thinking that the idea of “video tutorials” might translate nicely in our pandemic context. If students engage in creating these now it may help future students if the online format continues beyond Winter 2021 at traditionally in-person institutions. 1/?

#aboerjc Moving away from textbooks is a challenge – creating #OER #OEP can be so also. It takes a village to create – bottom up from instructors with help from instructional designers, techs, and institutional champions who support and encourage #openaccessDr. Constance Blomgren @DocBlomReplying to @Cambrian_Jess @KlamnJam

Yes I think that it is part of the picture at the higher ed institutes. For profs & sessional instructors a textbook seems straightforward for all involved @egchristiansen @margymaclibrary #aboerjc

#ABOERJC @nthnlwly have found this especially challenging, because COVID has limited access to physical copies, so we can’t even go to sign out a book from another campus or sit and read it

Nathan Lawley  he/him/his @nthnlwly6d

#aboerjc A3: In one Creative Nonfiction course the entire assignment was to do research on publishers and write a piece to potentially submit to a publication. I don’t remember an open aspect to the assignment but it was highly valuable, if not renewable. 3/3

#aboerjc Researching would be more difficult without access to university/college library as tutor or grad student. @melyoung00 @nthnlwlyCordelia Snowdon @CordeliaSnowdonReplying to @DocBlom @Cambrian_Jess

#ABOERJC True! Perhaps not selfish but even while advocating for OER I did not realize just how thankful I would be for open content after I left university.

#ABOERJC I feel like that’s an effort to try to challenge perceptions of OER as poor quality. ‘Looking’ like a traditional textbook may make people more comfortable because it will align with expectations about what teaching materials ‘should’ look like

Rosemarri Klamn, MAPC, CPHR she/her/hers @KlamnJam6d

#aboerjc In Canada there seems to be more #OER and #OEP uptake in K-12 – very lively discussions. @verenanz has great examples. There are pockets of innovation at unis and colleges.Jess O’Reilly @Cambrian_JessReplying to @DocBlom @AthabascaU

I can certainly relate to that feeling. Do you think we in Canada lag behind other countries or pockets of innovation when it comes to #OER and #OEP uptake? If we’re the laggards, who are the leaders?

Cordelia Snowdon @CordeliaSnowdon6dReplying to @CordeliaSnowdon @DocBlom @Cambrian_Jess

#ABOERJC Lastly, from a purely selfish standpoint, I am even more appreciative of OER now because I can still access research without a student library subscription

Cordelia Snowdon @CordeliaSnowdon6dReplying to @DocBlom @Cambrian_Jess

#ABOERJC Good point! I am also curious how the pandemic has affected textbook sales and if we will see more student-led advocacy within the classroom. This was always challenging b/c of the power imbalance but maybe now pressure will increase?

Dr. Constance Blomgren @DocBlom6dReplying to @Cambrian_Jess @AthabascaU

There are pockets of leaders everywhere but as @mweller notes Big #OER needs to meet up with little oer. #aboerjc

#ABOERJC A2 I was wrapping up my final semester in March, so I have not experienced my own profs shifting to include more OER, but I am excited by the increasing narrative around the need to provide accommodations and remove barriers that opens up discussions of OER
