#aboerjc Thank you @DocBlom for discussion on @arasbazkurt article on DE and ODL. Archive at: https://wordpress.com/post/aboerjournalclub.home.blog/433

You make a great point. I suppose we could alter the definition of ‘mature’ so it’s not age dependant. I think of it more as ‘maturity,’ or increased self-confidence, that leads an individual to undertake self-directed learning #aboerjc

#aboerjc A5: Technology enables DE and ODL; although Bozkurt notes ICT are not the ultimate goal; reducing barriers, and increasing interaction and communication are the goal (p. 266). Rhizomatic learning = quest for knowledge enabled through networks.Dr. Constance Blomgren @DocBlom

You are all totally distracting me with this amazing chat … as I try to get my marking done. The serendipitous and community focused nature of rhizomatic learning definitely helps with understanding open learning concepts #ABOERjc #edci339

#aboerjc A4: As an instructor I find some learners are at a pedagogical stage of dependence on resources and getting “it right” rather than understanding. If I have little control over curriculum I can still inject questions to raise curiosity. @egchristiansenDr. Constance Blomgren @DocBlom

However, as I reflect on this I’m starting to realize that I personally identify as ‘self directed’ and probably always have. Would explain why I resisted structure outside of assignment instructions and was more likely to engage in a loosely run seminar #aboerjc

#aboerjc A3: As a informal/formal post-secondary learner I see my early experiences reflected in andragogy but mostly in heutagogy; independence, and self-efficacy. Early DE experiences were dependent on resources – subsequent cohort experiences enhanced my ability to learn.Dr. Constance Blomgren @DocBlom

#aboerjc Q3 3. As an online (informal/formal) learner, have you seen your experiences reflected in @arasbozkurt Figure 5? If so, how? @egchristiansen @jennihayman @Cambrian_Jess @margymaclibrary @KlamnJam

Erik Christiansen @egchristiansenOct 6Replying to @DocBlom @KlamnJam and 4 others

From an educator perspective, I’d say that my #Library #InformationLiteracy instruction falls largely under andragogy or heutagogy – with more of a move toward the latter in DE. Often, providing resources so learners can ‘explore’ is all that’s necessary #aboerjc

Dr. Constance Blomgren @DocBlomOct 6Replying to @erikasmith @Cambrian_Jess and 2 others

Yes…I see that too. Pedagogy comes from K-12 but it has infiltrated the higher ed literature that is part of #oep #aboerjc

Erik Christiansen @egchristiansenOct 6Replying to @KlamnJam @thatpsychprof and 2 others

That’s an interesting take. Do you think certain types of individuals are ‘generally’ more likely to pursue DE/ODL? I’ve often wondered this myself and if there are personality differences and learning style differences #aboerjc

Dr. Constance Blomgren @DocBlomOct 6Replying to @egchristiansen @verenanz

Yes…so moving up the pyramid & the maturity of learners is part of enhancing self-directed learning. #aboerjc

Erik Christiansen @egchristiansenOct 6Replying to @DocBlom @Cambrian_Jess and 3 others

It does if we define engagement as the activities created and facilitated by the instructor. I suppose a counter argument could be to argue that at the highest stage, autonomous learners (mature learners) engage themselves. Perhaps I misunderstand the author’s argument 😉#aboerjc

Rosemarri Klamn, MAPC, CPHR she/her/hers @KlamnJamOct 6

#aboerjc. A2: My experience with DE and ODL is coloured by strong motivation to learn. My experience with promoting openness in education is similar to stages of pedagogy, andragogy, and heutagogy to a degree. @thatpsychprof @rlawson545 @verenanzDr. Constance Blomgren @DocBlom

Q2 #aboerjc The pyramid diagram (p. 264) indicates a progression from engagement, to cultivation to realization. Does this fit with your experiences with openness in education? @Cambrian_Jess @erikasmith @mcnuttsays @verenanz

I think so, at least in lower level courses. There’s certainly a relationship – in my experience – between learner maturity and how much effort is required to engage the class #aboerjc

Rosemarri Klamn, MAPC, CPHR she/her/hers @KlamnJamOct 6

#aboerjc. A1: I like the relationship between learner maturity and autonomy and instructor control and course structuring that shift between the three concepts. @BrandonCarsonEd @catherinecronin @laurelbeatonRosemarri Klamn, MAPC, CPHR she/her/hers @KlamnJam

A1: The three concepts demonstrate a shift in how learning/teaching has evolved from teacher-centric to student-centric, similar to the evolution of DE and ODL (open learning removes barriers). #aboerjc twitter.com/DocBlom/status…

Student led sessions can lead to engaging classes, but it’s hard to create consistency in the experience. Student directed classes seem to work best with upper level courses where students are more used to seminar style lessons #aboerjc

Erik Christiansen @egchristiansenOct 6Replying to @DocBlom @verenanz

I think this pyramid is pretty representative. I do find that as engagement goes up (or as I try to increase engagement), my control of the class increases. #aboerjc

I have 6 questions so let’s start! Q1. We will talk about the second half ( pp. 261 – 273) as it relates to open and distance learning (ODL). Bozkurt discusses pedagogy, andragogy, and heutagogy on page 264. How do these 3 influence your understanding of ODL?@verenanz
