I’ll end my contributions by sharing a resource I am intrigued by for the grand mission of empathetic communication! pz.harvard.edu/who-we-are/abo… #aboerjc It was lovely catching up with your thoughts, folks! G’night!

That internal work is so core to successful OEP, and there it is so much better to be told that you can help create a solution rather than be told you are wrong and there is only one ‘right’ answer. OEP bridges reconciliation, social justice, with building skills /6 #aboerjc

Thoughts on exp learning, OEP, & safe vs. brave space were covered by others, but I will reiterate that educators/facilitators have to run thru it first & recognize their own biases & limitations before attempting it w/ others – be ok with not knowing, saying so. /5 #aboerjc

I digress a tad because it’s important to also recognize the subconscious benefits of “finding purpose” – these distractions are overcome more easily if there’s a compelling enough reason to command our full attention. It’s also an excellent CBT tool. /4 #aboerjc

I am seeing this play out in my daily interactions w/ others, & know that it is somewhat due to the isolating nature of the pandemic. Every conversation feels like a test, & that I’m always going to fail if I don’t beeline toward the outcome. /2 #aboerjc

Wasn’t able to join in real-time, but had a chance to read through this piece after! There are SO MANY note-worthy resources in here, and they have value beyond students and educators. It is increasingly difficult to empathize with each other these days /1 #aboerjcMichelle Brailey @TheMichMonster

#aboerjc So many gifted practitioners out there. Twitter chats gives us all opportunity to co-create knowledge. Perhaps folks in different time zones can offer ideas and discuss post-chat. We wait a few days to archive @Bali_Maha @SarahLambertOz @CherylHWMichelle Brailey @TheMichMonster

#aboerjc because we are a small group tonight, I thought I would post these last qu’s together. 3) Is there anything missing from this dialogue? 4) What are your hopes for students in this difficult time? If you are tuning in late, here is the article edutopia.org/article/studen…

#aboerjc I see similarities between creating these safe spaces, OEP, and action research. Friere’s thematic investigation (1970) authentic reflection, facilitated, building trust, and co-creating knowledge. @TheMichMonster @DocBlom @verenanzDr. Verena Roberts @verenanz

These are the quotes to describe “safe learning spaces” (as a result of OEP and experiential learning) from my research: docs.google.com/document/d/1WR… #Aboerjc I heard similar ideas in the article….

I think sometimes safe spaces are conflated with private spaces. The former can make it hard to raise critical/controversial questions, where the latter creates a private environment for people to ‘think out loud’ respectfully #aboerjc

Dr. Verena Roberts @verenanzFeb 2

Students repond to learning that they feel a part of. Not just inclusive, but their learning that looks like their dreams, connects to their passions & interests, is relevant, timely & meaningful. I firmly believe open learning provides these authentic experiences. #aboerjcMichelle Brailey @TheMichMonster

In my experience, undergrad programs do a good job of promoting critical thinking skills in a social context. Those conversations tend to be high level/general. Integrating this with critical thinking in a ‘puzzle context’ (dev real world solutions) is a big challenge #aboerjc

This is tangentially related to the article. I always encourage students to apply ideas/concepts to the real world for their future practice. Kind of like civics class in high school #aboerjc

@DocBlom Welcome! Good to see you! You read my mind. My next question was going to be about bringing this towards open practices #aboerjc

#aboerjc A2. I am a researcher/advocate. I am in awe of practitioners like @verenanz @DocBlom @egchristiansen and others who curate and work directly w/ teachers / librarians who influence educators and learners. #EducatorslAsLearnersMichelle Brailey @TheMichMonster

#aboerjc @verenanz @KlamnJam @egchristiansen , I think it is just us and you are all experienced teachers. Are there any practices you already use in classes or you have experienced that you valued? I bet others will be interested in your experiences!

Dr. Constance Blomgren @DocBlomFeb 2Replying to @TheMichMonster

I too liked the idea of students being involved and connected to the “real world”. Open practices encourage students of all ages to know and understand how the may influence their corner of the world. #aboerjc

Oh yes! Open Ed Alberta Pressbooks Platform LITERALLY gave the students the opportunity to amplify, share and build knowledge with others! (And 2learn what #OER is all about by “experiencing” the potential) …. #EdTechEthics #aboerjcDr. Erika Smith @erikasmith

Excited to see “Ethical Use of Technology in Digital Learning Environments: Graduate Student Perspectives” out by @verenanz @dmichelej @ACHurrell et al. And this open book uses our Open Education Alberta Pressbooks platform, too! 🙌 openeducationalberta.ca/educationaltec…
