It was #aboerjc chat and a question on #oer, open texts and zed creds☺️

We were advocating for funding and policies that recognized #OER for tenure and awards during my terms, but @samrurec could probably speak to their current advocacy work and the policies they are trying to replicate #ABOERJC

Really?? #OER is a BC thing? What do you hear about eCampus Ontario then? People need to learn about federal government moving toward open data & open access journals, cousins to #OER. #aboerjc @DavidDraperAB @verenanz

Chaten Jessel @ChatenJesselApr 6

Q7: What are some policies that have to be changed at your home institution in order for ZTC signifiers to become a more viable option? #aboerjc

Chaten Jessel @ChatenJesselApr 6Replying to @DocBlom

Do you by any chance know of some concrete policy that has been implemented in these provinces to support OER growth beyond just providing funds? I’ve been hearing about policy a lot recently and would love to advocate for it more from the students side #aboerjc

Dr. Constance Blomgren @DocBlomApr 6Replying to @ChatenJessel

@thatpsychprof at Kwantlen U in Vancouver leads the Z degree in Canada. Athabasca U is part of OERu which has something similar to the z degree. Many USA colleges in CA have z degrees. It’s about equity in higher ed. #aboerjc @verenanz

#aboerjc Grants would be an incentive. That is how AB OER and #aboerjc evolved – through one-time grant for individuals/groups at Alberta institutions to develop courses/projects etc. #OER begins to beget #OEP #OpenEdChaten Jessel @ChatenJesselReplying to @KlamnJam

Do you believe that incentivizing OER creation through grants etc would be a good way to tackle this problem? #aboerjc

Chaten Jessel @ChatenJesselApr 6

Q6: The idea of Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) signifiers being put on classes has been gaining traction recently. Have you heard of ZTC before? If so, how do you think this will impact progress towards #OpenEd? #aboerjc

Chaten Jessel @ChatenJesselApr 6Replying to @CordeliaSnowdon

Its funny because I was recently told this same thing by library staff at my own institution. They mentioned how well the student led Op-Ed piece set the stage for the future of #OER in Alberta #aboerjc

Q5: What does your ideal environment of support for #OER at your institution look like? What are some actionable ways that you could work towards it? #aboerjc

Cordelia Snowdon @CordeliaSnowdonApr 6Replying to @ChatenJessel

A4 I look to the students to set the direction. While I was a recent student advocate, now as a staff member at a University, I want to amplify the stories students are sharing about their needs & experiences with OER rather than me saying the best way to advocate #ABOERJC

Dr. Constance Blomgren @DocBlomApr 6Replying to @ChatenJessel

For sure…C21 is about the participatory tech that we have available. It shifts the onus of content from being static e.g resting solely with educ publishers to other means.E.g wikipedia although imperfect is crowdsourced. Thoughts? @egchristiansen @erikasmith #aboerjc #OER #oep

Chaten Jessel @ChatenJesselApr 6Replying to @CordeliaSnowdon @mru

Hi Cordelia, thank you so much for being part of the discourse tonight! I echo the sentiment that education should be barrier free and accessible for all #aboerjc

Chaten Jessel @ChatenJesselApr 6

Q4: #OpenEd has been championed by individuals such as yourselves for a very long time, how do you think students can best support your work? #aboerjc

Rosemarri Klamn, MAPC, CPHR she/her/hers @KlamnJamApr 6

#aboerjc A3: I would be interested how SAIT was able to create so many #OER. Was this a top-down or bottom-up process? Who were the champions? #OpenEdChaten Jessel @ChatenJessel

Q3: What do you think the major barriers are, beyond funding, as to why #OER hasn’t been more widely adopted by instructors in post-secondary education? #aboerjc

Rosemarri Klamn, MAPC, CPHR she/her/hers @KlamnJamApr 6

A3: #aboerjc #OpenEd #OERtexts Perhaps not all instructors have the support of administrators – without policies and training to help nourish the #OER process it can be risky. Without policy or support educators have little time to incorporate into their teaching methods.Chaten Jessel @ChatenJessel

Would you be willing to expand on OER integration in C21 learning? Its not something I am totally familiar with, but after a quick google search it seems like an amazing initiative! #aboerjc

A3 The myths about the quality of #OER, faculty time and considerations around tenure, and – as I’ve commonly heard in Alberta – beliefs that OER is a “BC thing” #ABOERJC

Cordelia Snowdon @CordeliaSnowdonApr 6Replying to @ChatenJessel

A1 I’m Cordelia and am a recent graduate from @mru. I advocated for #OER adoption when I was a student executive because I believe learning should be affordable and accessible, and OER benefit students as well as learners outside of an academic setting #ABOERJC

Dr. Constance Blomgren @DocBlomApr 6Replying to @ChatenJessel

#OER is part of C21 learning. It allows relevant & localized content to be part of meaningful co- creation with students. It requires a cadre of supports to be inplace for high quality oer to be part of the learning experience. #aboerjc #OER

Chaten Jessel @ChatenJesselApr 6Replying to @KlamnJam

Absolutely. Creating OER is such a collaborative process where all parties are able to contribute and learn valuable skills! #aboerjc

A2: Many workplaces encourage collaboration and teamwork. Creating #OER takes knowledge, negotiating learning, and building on each other’s strengths. #aboerjcChaten Jessel @ChatenJessel

Q2: One of the most important aspects of #OER is their collaborative nature. How do you think working with #OER can prepare students for future employment opportunities? #aboerjc
